CELEBRATE RESPONSIBLY THIS LABOR DAY: DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — From August 21 through September 7, 2026, state and local law enforcement agencies across Arkansas will join the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement campaign.

The campaign’s goal is simple: prevent impaired driving crashes and save lives during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel after drinking can expect increased enforcement and will be held accountable.

Labor Day continues to be one of the deadliest holidays for impaired driving. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday period (6 p.m. August 30 through 5:59 a.m. September 3), 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide. Of those fatalities, 170 (34%) involved a drunk driver. Among drivers ages 18 to 34 who died in crashes during the holiday period, 40% were impaired, with BACs of .08 or higher.

“Keeping Arkansas roads safe is our highest priority,” said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar. “If your Labor Day plans include alcohol, make your transportation plans before you take your first drink. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call someone you trust. There is never an excuse for driving impaired, and during this campaign, law enforcement officers across Arkansas will be actively looking for those who make that dangerous choice.”

According to the Arkansas Highway Safety Office, planning ahead is the easiest way to prevent an impaired driving crash. If your celebration includes alcohol:

Designate a sober driver before you leave.
Use a taxi or rideshare service.
Stay where you are if you have been drinking.
Never let a friend drive impaired – take their keys and help them find a safe ride home.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing impaired driving. If you see someone you suspect is driving under the influence, maintain a safe distance and contact local law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
